Maths
Intent:
At St Joseph's, through the maths curriculum, we aim to ensure that all children are well prepared and are lifelong learners. We aim to place problem solving at the heart of our mathematics teaching. The expectation is that all children welcome a mastery approach and that teachers foster the attitude that we all, even the most able among us, should be challenged in order to learn.
Our main aims for children are to:
Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics through varied and frequent practice involving increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils have conceptual understanding and are able to recall and apply their knowledge rapidly and accurately to problems.
Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justfication or proof using mathematical language.
Solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems with increasing sophistication including breaking down problems into a series of simple steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
Recall and apply their knowledge confidently and efficiently
Be secure in using written methods for which they have a clear understanding
