Art & Design

Intent

At St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, we aim to provide a high-quality Art and Design education that engages, inspires and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of Art and Design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation. Art and Design is taught as a discrete subject across the school. This gives the children the opportunity to develop their skills using a range of media and materials. The children learn the skills of drawing, painting, printing, collage, textiles, 3D work and digital art and are given the opportunity to explore and evaluate different creative ideas. We will introduce a range of works and develop knowledge of the styles and vocabulary used by famous artists.

At St Joseph’s we follow the National Curriculum for Art and Design and adhere to its aims. The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.
  • Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
  • Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
  • Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and
  • cultural development of their art forms.
  • To develop self-confidence, self-esteem and positive attitudes towards each other, school
  • and learning by providing opportunities for responsible self-directed activities and personalised learning through which children can talk about their ideas and work and have outcomes acknowledged through display.
  • By the end of each Key Stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the programme of study.
  • To be able to evaluate and assess work they create through annotations and evaluations.
